CS-Cart 3 Upgrade FAQ

CS-Cart UpgradeHi,

We receive many questions about the upcoming release of CS-Cart 3 and today I would like to cover some of them concerning the upgrade procedure and in particular about Pro-to-Ultimate edition upgrade.

General Questions

Q: After CS-Cart 3 is released, how can I upgrade my CS-Cart to this version?

A: CS-Cart 3 is a major release with many modifications, so the upgrade process will be a bit trickier than it was for previous versions.

Unlike before, it will be impossible to upgrade CS-Cart to version 3 via the Upgrade center in the admin panel. Instead, it will be required to install CS-Cart 3 separately and then transfer the data from CS-Cart 2.2.4 to it.

In order to do it we will provide a special add-on for CS-Cart 2.2.4 that will allow you to pack the whole store database and images into a special archive.

CS-Cart 3 will have a pre-installed Export/Import Stores add-on that will be used for importing store data from such archives.

Also, if both CS-Cart 3 and 2.2.4 are installed on the same server, you will be able to perform data transfer without creating a transition archive: CS-Cart 3 will be able to connect directly to MySQL database of CS-Cart 2.2.4 and gather all data automatically.

Q: My CS-Cart store is older than 2.2.4. Will I be able to upgrade to 3 too?

A: Yes, you will, but it will be required to upgrade your CS-Cart up to version 2.2.4 first, then follow the instructions above.

Q: My current CS-Cart installation is populated with products and other data. Will this data be available in my store after upgrading to CS-Cart 3?

A: Yes, it will. Products, categories, users, etc. will be available after the upgrade just as they were before. No store data will be lost, because the database structure will be just converted to the one of CS-Cart 3. This also applies to upgrading from Professional to Ultimate edition.

Q: Will my storefront design remain the same after the upgrade?

A: CS-Cart 3 introduces a new and more powerful block manager and a whole new approach to page structuring.

The design templates of CS-Cart 2.x will be incompatible with this new structure, but the content of the blocks and their positions will be transferred — they will just look differently.

Initially CS-Cart 3 will have only 1 new storefront skin, and we will include more free ones as soon as possible after the release.

Q: Will my custom add-ons for CS-Cart 2.x work in CS-Cart 3?

A: Custom-made add-ons for version 2.x will need some revisioning to work in CS-Cart 3. We will publish a detailed guide to add-on transferring on our site. UPD: The guide is available in the Developer Documentation section on our site.

Q: Will the new upgrade be available on the date of CS-Cart 3 release?

A: We will do our best, but most probably it will be available some time later.

Upgrading CS-Cart 2.2.4 Professional to CS-Cart 3 Ultimate

Q: I have 4 CS-Cart Professional installations and I want to switch to Ultimate Edition to have the ability to manage all my stores via a common admin panel. What should I do and how will the upgrade work in this case?

A: First of all, it is required to buy the upgrade of 1 Professional license to 1 Ultimate license pack (that includes 1 admin and 2 storefront Ultimate licenses) that will cost $455 after Ultimate Edition release, but at this moment it is available with $100 discount (unfortunately, there is no ability just to exchange Professional licenses to appropriate number of Ultimate ones).

Then, you will have the ability to exchange the rest of your Professional licenses to Ultimate storefront ones at no additional cost via CS-Cart Help Desk. As a result, you will have 1 admin and 5 storefront Ultimate licenses that will give you the right to make 1 Ultimate installation with 5 independent storefronts (the 5th storefront is a bonus).

Then, it will be required to move data from these 4 stores (based on CS-Cart Professional) to one Ultimate installation.

Moving data from CS-Cart 2.2.4 Professional to CS-Cart 3 Ultimate is similar to upgrading it to CS-Cart 3 Pro – make a special store archive and then deploy it in Ultimate or specify a path to a CS-Cart 2.2.4 store (if it resides on the same server).

Q: I want to pre-order an upgrade from Professional to Ultimate, but I won’t need CS-Cart Ultimate right after it is released. Will it be possible to activate the license upgrade later and continue using the Professional license until I am ready to move to Ultimate?

A: Yes, it will be possible to postpone the edition upgrade for not longer than 6 months and use your Professional license during this period.

    Hey guys, too much complicated business model I guess. Better prices and simply rules attract more people using your system and to be more popular.

    The CS-Cart system quality is excellent but this is maybe only your success not user’s. Good idea and your great work is a part of the success each other. From this point growing the community is very important. Get people more – it’s a gold for your business. Lower price of the base system can start people making more addons, themes and bring new ideas to improve your system to be better. Try ask yourself if you’re satisfied of the status and popularity of your system. You invited people to testing a new features. How much new people you attract? The money is not everything and your price politics shouting “we are fear about your money”. So you invent very high prices that need to pay customers every year. Sure you found a few people that worth pay these money. But you can find a lot more people ready to pay better price and it bring you more people, more licenses, more feedback and it makes from CS-Cart famous brand.

    What I recommended? Simplify CS-Cart variations. Stop providing Free version with cutting functions. Provide 2 versions: professional (full feature rich system) and ultimate (multishop + multivendor). The very good price for professional version is 199€, then ultimate 350€. The license should by grant user get free upgrade for whole branch. It mean, you release 2.x branch so user can upgrade your system through all 2.x versions “for free”. If you bring a new generation of the system with branch 3.x you can ask people buy upgrade.

    OK I wrote these ideas and not waiting to become reality. Only try thinking about profit of your and customers business. It can help each other incredible. Keep a good work.

    • Hi Gabriel,

      Really appreciate your ideas, of which there are some really great ones.

        The Uservoice feature is useless and outdated for having great ideas developed. Because Ranking can become useless depending on the frequent updates, active users, time posted, etc…

        Great ideas that are fresher, but located at the bottom of the list will have a bad chance of being developed. Rather, old great ideas that were useful back in the days will be at the top.

        You guys need to manually grow throw the list and pick out features that would be useful for the users not to your standards. Think in regards to the customer.

        Also, the ideas I presented in the blog comment below are things trending development and useful:
        http://blog.cs-cart.com/2011/12/12/professional-to-ultimate-upgrades-on-pre-sale/#comment-5971

        [1) a. You could use a New arrivals block instead or create a New arrivals category and fill it manually. If you need namely a self-refreshing category with the latest additions, you could use some help from our Custom development department, or try to create the proper add-on for yourself.]

        WHY DO I HAVE TO “If you need namely a self-refreshing category with the latest additions, you could use some help from our Custom development department, or try to create the proper add-on for yourself.” THIS FEATURE IS DEVELOPED FOR FREE IN OTHER SOFTWARE. I HAVE TO PAY PAY for simple features like this in cs-cart. This is annoying me since day 1. Doesn’t make any sense.

        ========================================================
        b. CS-Cart will allow you to create custom product tabs, so this functionality will be just no problem.
        =========================================================
        Yes, there is a functionality that allows you to create custom product tabs. However, there is no custom setting that allows me to list “related products” in the same category. Which is very useful. Again, I am able to do this with other carts. Surprised, cs-cart does not allow this. And again I used cs-cart long enough. I know what you guys can and cannot do.

        ===================================================
        2) Thanks for this tip! Could you please post your SEO improvement ideas at our Idea tracker? This is the main place we take ideas to be implemented from. If the feature is valued by other clients too, we will include it in our development circle.
        ==========================================================
        I already did! And no I will not anymore. All was already said and read by you from my other blog comments. I’m a tired customer of cs-cart. You guys don’t listen. Just say “Thank you for the suggestion” …..

        Like I said, this is a useless idea tracker. Feature will never be valued as much by other clients because the community is not active and big enough to being going through cs-cart uservoice as explained before. People will submit, and majority will not be active voters afterwards. This is because of your audience and the way you structure and marker your site.

        =====================================
        3) CS-Cart has its own built-in mailing system. Also, Mailchimp and AWeber integration are already suggested, you can vote these features up.
        =====================================
        AGAIN! Useless voting system. You know it is a Great feature. And its trending, and will attract more customers that use these mailing system. If this seems good, add to development, instead of waiting bizallion years for a small amount of nonactive users to vote for my feature in uservoice where thousands of other ideas are displayed.

        =============================================
        4) The abandoned cart feature is already available in CS-Cart 2.x. Just got to Customers -> Abandoned/Live carts in your administration area.
        =============================================
        I know this feature. But this is not what I’m talking about. This feature only displays carts abandoned by customers. But is limited what you can really do with this data.

        If you read correctly, I said Abandon Shopping Cart “Reminder”: The keyword here is “Reminder”. Yes, you can see who abandon shopping cart, but there is no automation to remind your clients to complete their purchases, by sending them automatic emails with their abandoned shopping cart! And this can be useful using the mailing system from mailchimp, getresponse, etc…

        ===================================================
        5) Facebook login, as well as login with Google, Twitter, OpenID and many other services are provided by the built-in Janrain add-on. It integrates your CS-Cart store with a Janrain account. You can read more about this feature in this post.

        Facebook store feature is one of the most highly rated in the Uservoice. We consider it a very valuable feature, and it is going to be implemented sometime in the future.
        ===================================================
        Janrain equals third party software that charges customers like me monthly for simple facebook social login.
        Again PAYPAYPAY! I wish you were a customer of your own software to understand us. And NOW twigmo is doing the same. This is getting crazy!

        Facebook store is a feature that should have been developed without needing users to vote so much on it. This is one my trending features I’ve been telling you about.

        This is just common sense to develop a feature like facebook store. Why waist time!!

        ===============================
        6) Sorry, I didn’t quite get what you mean. CS-Cart add-ons are available right from the admin area, and they are all free.
        ===============================

        You never do! This is probably the best idea. For sure, it will solve most problems above. However, if you plan to take on this task, you need to rearrange your site in a way to engage customer to take part in developing plugins.

        YES, I know some are in the forums. However, the rate at which you gain new participant to develop NEW plugins is low because of your business model.

        Wordpress, CS-cart, and Prestoshop have a plugin directory in their admin backend. Congrats.
        However, wordpress and cs-cart have a plugin directory DISPLAYED IN THE FRONT END that is easy to access and attractive for developers and customer to download and install within their admin backend.

        “CS-CART” Plugin directory

        http://addons.prestashop.com/en/
        http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/

        Now why must I explain that, when I told you to analyze wordpress directory and you’ll see what I’m talking about. There is a big difference in what you can do better. It is common sense.

        However, you’re just looking at my lengthy comments as a “Thank you for your suggestions, great idea”.

        The ceo of CS-cart really needs to stop and think of a new approach for 2012. And expand cs-cart so that it is efficient, flexible, massive, and user friendly. And questions needs to be asked on how we can structure the site to create a more active, bigger, and engaging community.

        Lastly, change your mindset from “We only needed 10 customers today” to “Let’s obtain as many customers as we can” . Basically don’t limit yourself or your success. You guys like doing “OK”, when you have the potential to do much “BETTER”. And don’t say to yourself “it is not necessary once you hear an idea”. I feel like your developers working back there might be encouraging this statement. Most close-minded developers may have that tendency.” However, there are developers. Leave it to a business or marketing professional to handle this task. And have them listen and just program whats required.

        Here are all the comments I’ve written below. Hopefully, in the next month or so I see a major improvement. This may be the last blog comment depending on the progress of cs-cart.

        http://blog.cs-cart.com/2011/11/01/new-features-in-the-future-cs-cart-3-release/

        • Dear John,

          UserVoice has proven itself quiet an effective tool to detect the opinion of the community.

          I have found your ideas there and they are highly voted by other members (e.g. the Abandoned Cart Reminder feature). Which means that they are very likely to appear in future CS-Cart releases.

          The reason these features are not implemented instantly is that the upcoming CS-Cart 3 is in the focus at the time. We are not adding new features, but polishing the release.

          It is of course pain to read such a disappointed view on CS-Cart. I sincerely hope that your opinion will change as we are finished with CS-Cart 3 and added some of your requested features.

  3. Michael says:

    If I am testing the CS-Cart RC version and plan to launch my website in month from now (close to the final release of the version 3 of cs-cart), will I be able to upgrade the installed RC version with minimum pain possible? Or I will be required to install the final version from scratch?

    • Hello Michael!

      You will be able to transfer the database from RC to the final release with a special script we will release.

      Anyway, as stated in the post, upgrading will involve a separate CS-Cart 3 installation.

  4. londonman says:

    i like the CS v3, maybe i am used to have a category on the left side, as it seems to be a nice experience for people to find the item quickly…
    as people is used to look stuff from the left side and search on the top…
    just a tip

  5. londonman says:

    will it work now ?

    is this available now ?
    give me me information

    thank you

    • Hi,

      No, those add-ons are not yet available.
      Basically, there is no upgrade from CS-Cart 2.2.4 to CS-Cart 3 RC. The release candidate is but a testing one and is not supposed to be used as a substitute for CS-Cart 2.2.4 on production stores.

  6. Elroy says:

    Hi, CS cart new version need to have categories filter on the side just like the Shop by brand, and shop by price,
    when you click on a main category on top, it filters to the side, so customer can narrow down, they search more,
    Thanks

    • Dear Elroy,

      If you click on a global category in the top menu, a product filter will be displayed on the side. It can contain any options to be used for filtering, including price and brand.
      You can try it in the demo store.

      If that is not what you meant, please ask right away, I will try to make it clear for you.

  7. Peter says:

    Dear CS-Cart team!
    I’m looking for an e-commerce software, and I’m glad I found CS-Cart. However, this V3 release worries me. If I buy a license (Professional) now, will I be able to upgrade to V3, or I’ll have to pay some upgrade fee?

    How does this upgrade model works at you?

    Thanks for the answer in advance.

    • Hello Peter,

      Yes, if you purchase a Professional license now and start using CS-Cart 2.2.4, you will be able to upgrade the store to v. 3 as soon as it is released for free.
      Still, you should keep in mind that CS-Cart 3 is a major release with some core modifications. When you will perform an upgrade from 2.2.4 to 3.0.1 only the database and images will be transferred.
      So, I personally recommend you to wait a bit until CS-Cart 3 hits final release and install it in the first place.
      If you wish to start filling up you store right now, I suggest you download the RC. We will release a script to import the database from the RC to the final release.

      If you have any further questions, please do ask!

  8. Peter says:

    Dear Konstantin!

    Thank you for your answer. The next one is not closely related to the V3, but the CS-Cart support itself. If someone decides to go for the 14-days trial. Will he/she get a support with that trial?

    I applied for the trial, installed it on my website, and imeddiately encountered questions, problems. I have reported them ASAP, but received no answer. Even posted a message in the forums, but only a person, totally unrelated to the Team replied.

    • Dear Peter,

      The technical support is not available during the personal demo (15 days) or trial (30 days) period, but our sales department will be pleased to answer any questions regarding CS-Cart functionality.

      Use the contact form on our site or leave a message via HelpDesk, and you will get a response ASAP.

  9. Joe says:

    I have an old professional Licence with perpetual free upgrades

    If I upgrade to ultimate will I get perpetual free upgrades as well?

  10. Sadeq Alfardan says:

    Dear CS-CART

    1 it is 15th April now, when do you expect to release the final CS-CART v3?!
    as you said before it is going to take 1-3 months, and it is 2 months now since you announce it.

    2 if I purchased the CS-Cart MultiVendor now do I have to pay for the Updgrade to v3?!

    • Greetings Sadeq,

      1) The final release is delayed due to several technical issues, polishing, refactoring, etc. The estimated release date lies in about several weeks now. We are sorry for this delay, it’s caused merely by our desire to release a consistent and stable product.
      2) If you purchase CS-Cart 2.2.4 Multi-Vendor now, you will not have to pay for upgrade to the CS-Cart 3 Multi-Vendor. A full year long update and upgrade access is available for you with your license by default.

      If there are any other questions, I am only happy to be at your service and answer them.

  11. Miles says:

    THE RC for V3 is awesome. Great job to everyone. We have been using an antiquated version of CS-CART and have been experiencing issues, but are excited to see this new version as very promising for the simplicity our business needs.

    I have one question: We sell CD albums and MP3 Downloads as two separate products, because there is no way to combine the two options into one product item. Will there or is there a way to combine either a sale of a product and/or the download files. Will we continue having 2 separate products for each format?

    Thank you and looking forward to the release. Very exciting.

    • Hi Miles,

      You can use the Product Configurator add-on to group downloadable and regular products, so they will look as 1 same product to a customer, while technically remaining 2 separate products.

      The other solution is to request a custom modification especially for your store, you can leave your request to our Custom Development team via HelpDesk.

      I hope this was helpful, if there are any further questions, please ask!

      • Miles says:

        Thank you Konstantin, we definitely will look into the Product Configurator add-on or may need further modification developed for our needs. Thank you for the quick response. Looking forward to final release… hopefully we can import the previous V1 users into V3. Thank you.

  12. Fabrizio Aureli says:

    you have a date for the release of version 3 (final release)?

  13. Brandon says:

    I guess the middle of April came and went without the release of CS-Cart 3. CS-Cart should give us REALISTIC release dates so we as businesses can plan accordingly. Now if we knew you wouldn’t get this released on time, how do you not know the same thing?

    • Hello Brandon,

      Yes, unfortunately, we were unable to release CS-Cart 3 in the middle of April, but it was an approximate date. We always declare that it is impossible to provide an exact release date due to the nature of what we do. Look, unlikely you will find a software development company that provides an exact release date if their software is more complex than Tetris game.

      We want to release a stable version of CS-Cart 3, so that everyone could be sure they can rely on our ecommerce solution. We are doing our best to complete all the required tests and release version 3.

      Thank you for your patience and understanding.
