When launching their online store many people overcomplicate the concept of a blog. It doesn’t have to be a diary, contain business or industry news, or follow any particular convoluted formula. It’s just a section of your overall website where you can publish content relevant to your audience and draw them in from search engines.

Blogging and ecommerce actually have a similar timeframe of growth, with the first blog style post being published in 1994 and “Ten Summoner’s Tales” by Sting being the first ‘secure’ online purchase that same year. Yet it’s only been more recently that blogs have become important to online store owners.

Why? Because blog posts drive traffic (which can be leveraged for sales), and inform customers (building trust).

Optimizing your blog for search engines (SEO) is also a great way to get organic traffic (as opposed to spending an advertising budget), which can be especially difficult for stores that don’t require much written content on product pages.

You can learn more about the history of blogging, its benefits, the best platforms and how to get them up and running, via the facts sheet below.
